 Eight tiny lights

 Burn into the night

 A captive People

Ready to fight

 *

 A story is told

 To young faces hushed

 Of a spirit, a belief

 Too strong to be crushed

 *

Hannukkah is more

Than dreidles, the Hora

Hannukkah is more

Than presents, a Menorah

*

A battle raged on

Two thousand years ago

A small band of Jews

A superior foe

*

Jews fighting like lions

Not dying like sheep

Legends were born

Our history to keep

*

A Temple was captured

A “miracle” occurred

Do we need a miracle

For their cries to be heard?

*

Five of them died

The Maccabee Brothers

Swords in their hands

One after the other

*

Hannukkah is more

Than candles in December

It’s a raging fire

To make us remember

 *

They fought to be free

They stood man to man

That’s why we’re still here

In so many a land

*

So the children all listen

To storytellers wise

With proud memories shining

From their dark Jewish eyes

*

And the story is told

To young faces hushed

Of a spirit, a belief

Too strong to be crushed

Remember!

I don’t know music, but those lines would be perfect in a song.
