The Slow Unfolding of the Rose…by Robert M. Katzman
The Slowly Unfolding of the Rose

When we meet I will hug you
Kiss your cheek,
Help you with your bags
Ask if you’re hungry
Invite you into my old car
Which is a good old car
Make sure you put on your safety belt
Ask if you like doo-wop music
Because I have a lot of it
Go someplace simple so we can eat something together
And you can unwind from the flight
We’ll drive a little while
You’ll probably be talking my ear off
And sometimes I might hold your hand
I’ll show you
The beautiful lighthouse in Racine
And we can walk a little on the small rocky beach there
I’ll ask you if you want to go
Back to my nice warm brick house
See my three handmade wooden swings
My giant red brick fireplace
And the dam I built to keep the water from
Approaching my house from the yard
Then I’ll show you the geometric memorial garden
In the front of the house where the grass was
When we go inside
You can pick a room to sleep in
And put your stuff away
Or take a hot shower
Or whatever you want to do
And be by yourself
I will ask you
What you want for dinner
If you are willing to take
A chance on my cooking
Then I’ll light all those candles
And ask you if you want me
To rub your feet
Because I have strong workman’s hands
Used to using metal tools and wood
But also used to touching the softness of a woman
We can sit or go to a movie theater
You can pick out whatever you want to see
At some point in between
When all of these options are offered to you
I’ll wish to hold you in my arms
And imagine kissing you
And dream you’ll want to
Kiss me back
